Construction Site Security Policy (Workers Edition)
Updated: 13 April 2025
Physical security is about protecting human lives and organizational assets (e.g., employees, buildings, equipment, vehicles). These policies and rules are meant to be a baseline for all personnel to comply with at all times while on organizational time or at organization locations.
- I will report physical security concerns, vulnerabilities, and threats to my supervisor or the organization’s Ethics Hotline immediately upon discovery. If I suspect a crime is involved, I will call 911 — if it is safe to do so — and then notify my supervisor.
Access
- I will not share or allow another individual to use my access badge, unless responding to a life-or-death emergency.
- I will badge into badge-controlled locations — no piggybacking. Where an anti-passback exit badge reader exists, I will also badge out each time.
- I will check and lock all doors and padlocks (internal and external) that I am responsible for before leaving the premises. If I am the last person exiting an organization gate with a padlock, I will also lock it after I leave.
- I will verify that all visitors I am overseeing have signed in and signed out through the paper or electronic sign-in process for each visit to any organizational facility.
- I will not share or let another person borrow any keys assigned to me, unless there is a life-or-death emergency.
- I will not prop open any perimeter or key/badge-controlled door unless there is an immediate safety reason and an organizational employee or guard is actively monitoring the door.
- If I lose or become aware of any lost or stolen keys or access badges, I will report this immediately to my supervisor.
- I will not allow human or vehicular tailgating without individual verification.
- I will verify all perimeter doors (people, rollup, and other entrances) are closed and locked before the end of each shift if I believe I am the last person to leave the facility.
- I will make sure all visitors, suppliers, and customers who require escort are either accompanied at all times while on organization property, or monitored by organizational personnel to ensure they remain only in authorized areas and perform only authorized duties.
Assets
- I will not use any construction site assets for personal use without written authorization from my supervisor — including site Wi-Fi.
- I will verify that fleet vehicles and other moveable or motorized equipment that I or my team uses or is responsible for are locked (passenger doors and equipment/storage locks) before the end of each shift, even if stored in a locked building.
- I will verify all hazmat materials that my team uses or is responsible for are stored properly and that storage containers are locked before the end of each shift.
- I will verify all portable equipment stored outside of locked buildings that I or my team uses or manages is tongue-locked or wheel-chock locked before the end of each shift.
- I will not operate equipment or handle hazardous materials unless I have up-to-date training and certifications.
- I will not share organizational User IDs and passwords with other personnel at the construction site.
- I will not use authorized guest or staff Wi-Fi in a way that impacts my productivity.
- I will verify all inbound items are being delivered to the correct construction site, at the expected time, and are delivered correctly (including proper hazmat handling).
- I will verify all outbound items and assets departing the site are leaving at the correct time, on the correct truck or vehicle, with the correct driver, and with the correct transportation company.
- I will not remove any organizational assets from the construction site without written authorization from my supervisor.
Signature Note: I am a huge fan of wet signatures on these types of documents for accountability and investigation reasons. You can add the signature lines below to each rule/policy document, or have a collective wet signature with references in the Security Commitment Agreement document available on the One-Pager library page. Organizational preference.
